Louth Literacy Week

Ref: PCD/KC

20 January 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

Louth Academy is launching an exciting new Literacy initiative to help promote reading and ensure it is at the heart of our curriculum.

Research has shown that children’s ability to read has a huge impact on their capacity to access the curriculum whilst at school. Unfortunately, too many students stop reading when they move to secondary school and this can have a detrimental effect on their progress. Therefore, Louth Academy is launching a new Literacy initiative to encourage reading for pleasure and enhance progress across the curriculum.

The Literacy initiative already involves:

  • The addition of a new library at our Lower School stocked with the latest age appropriate titles.
  • New books purchased and added to the library at Upper School.
  • Lunch time library sessions available to all students.
  • Reading Plus software purchased for selected students to increase reading fluency and levels.
  • Form time reading sessions delivered twice weekly for students in Years 7–10.

The week commencing 24 January, students at Louth Academy will be taking part in Louth Literacy Week. This week will involve:

  • All students to carry a reading book with them at all times as part of their uniform.
  • The Scholastic Book Fair visiting Lower School from 25 January to 1 February.
  • A ‘Coffee Afternoonat Lower School on Thursday 27 January, 2–3pm, for parents of students in Years 7 and 8 to discuss literacy and browse the book fair.
  • The unveiling of a new Book Vending Machine.
  • Drop everything and read week. During this week whenever Y7–Y10 students hear the bell in lessons they will spend 5 minutes reading in lesson.

If you would like to attend the Literacy Coffee Afternoon, please complete the reply slip attached by Tuesday 25 January. Reply slips need to be handed to your child’s form tutor to help us plan for the event. Please report to the Main Reception on arrival. Car parking is available in the visitor’s carpark at the front of the Academy.

We look forward to working with parents to increase participation in reading and hope you can join us in the Lower School Library for our coffee afternoon.

Yours faithfully

Mr P Dickinson
Principal
