Letter To Parents - December 2018

20 December 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

As the first term of the 2018/19 academic year draws to a close, I would like to thank all parents/carers for their support during this term. Students have coped very well this term with the merging of the two separate academies and have enjoyed making new friends.

A high rate of attendance is essential in order for every student to achieve their full potential. We would like to remind parents that, to support this, the Government now classifies any student who has less than 90% attendance as a Persistent Absentee and this information has to be reported to the DfE. Please can I remind you to telephone the Academy every day that your son or daughter is absent. If an absence is for three days or more, medical evidence may be required in order to authorise the absence.

May we take this opportunity to thank parents and carers for their understanding and co-operation with regard to high standards of uniform. For further guidance and clarification, please see the Academy website for suggested footwear, trousers and the entire uniform policy. Please can we also remind you that jewellery is not permitted, other than a wrist watch and one small stud in each ear.

As we go through the darker months, we recommend that students wear a reflective vest or armband so that they can be seen when walking or cycling to and from the Academy. Cyclists should also wear cycle helmets and have reflectors and lights on their cycle for their own safety. Also, please ensure that the brakes on your child's cycle are in full working order.

We have had some complaints that a minority of students are cycling in a manner that endangers themselves or other road users. Please will parents and carers discuss and reinforce with their child the importance of cycling in an appropriate manner. The Academy will endeavour to contact individual parents if concerns are raised.

First Aid Room

Please note that the First Aid Room at the Academy is for emergency support only, for issues arising during the Academy day. If children are genuinely ill in the morning, parents/carers should take them to their doctor who is appropriately qualified to deal with any issues students may have.

Mobile Phones/MP3 Players/iPods/Smart Watches

The Academy has a policy of not allowing students to use mobile phones or MP3 players/iPods/smart watches on the site. These devices are not permitted, in order for us to ensure the welfare of every student and limit the disruption to their education. Any student who uses a mobile phone in the Academy will have the device confiscated for five school days. Students who continue to use their mobile phone in the Academy will be subject to the Academy's Behaviour Policy. Please note that students found with such a device during a controlled assessment or examination have to be reported to the Examination Board concerned and risk gaining zero marks for their work, disqualification from the subject concerned or even disqualification from all GCSE subjects. These rules apply whether the student is using the device or not. Please discuss this with your child and ensure that he/she does not use electronic equipment in the Academy.

Academy Year Pattern

I have enclosed a year pattern for 2018/19 and 2019/20. Please do not book holidays during term time as these will be unauthorised and you may receive a fine.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Yours faithfully
